Start with a good AntiVirus package. My two top choices in order are Avast and AVG, both are free. I've used AVG for years, but now I prefer Avast. Avast now rates better at stopping the baddies, so I would recommend it over AVG. Avast requires a free email address registration that's good for a year, and you can renew each year, still free. Most Anti-Virus packages these days also protect your email, instant messenger conversations, peer to peer exchanges, and web browsing. Make sure you get the anti-virus updates. Most programs do it automatically. Avast even announces when it has rec'd the latest updates. Stay away from McAfee and Norton. Norton used to be the best, but now it is a total resource hog, as is McAfee.
If you have an XP machine, you'll need a personal firewall. The Vista version of Microsoft's firewall is better than the one that comes with XP, so you can probably get by without a third partry replacement. For XP, get ZoneAlarm or Comodo. Comodo is more effective, but ZoneAlarm is a lot quieter - fewer popups asking you what to do.
For other malware defense, install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Spybot Search & Destroy, and run them manually at least once a month. The free versions don't do any automatic protection.
Equally important, make sure the automatic updates from Microsoft are downloaded and installed religiously. These patches help close security loopholes that are constantly discovered. Make sure updates are turned on.
Most PCs come with recovery disks or a way to make them. If you have to create your own recovery CDs, your system should prompt you, and the documentation that came with it should explain it. Make sure you
have or make these CDs. If your system crashes, you can't go back and make the CDs. And it will cost you buck$ to replace them from the manufacturer.
For reading PDF files, Adobe Acrobat Reader is the most common program, but I'd recommend Fox-it PDF Reader, The basic version is free, and contains more features for free than 99% of folks will every use.
If you can get a student license installation of Microsoft Office through your college or university, go with it. It's cheap (compared to $430 regular price) or even free, depending on whatever deal the college has put
together with Microsoft. Otherwise, get Open Office which is free and getting pretty darn good. It reads and writes Microsoft Office compatible files, as well as open document formatted files.
Then, go through and check all the garbahzh that runs at boot up time from the manufacturer. If you don't need it regularly, it doesn't need to load and be running all the time. You'll be surprised how much your system speeds up.
For a list of Freeware picks that are, for the most part, best in class, check out this list from MajorGeeks. It'll give you some good options to pick from. Some have issues, so you can run any selections back past me and I'll give you my $.02 for free.
Finally, get e-Sword. It is the best Bible and Bible study software available at any price. (Yes, it's free. Thank Rick Meier for that!) You can get lots of Bible versions, commentaries, Bible dictionaries, and concordances. I use it regularly.

What can it do? WinSplit is especially useful for high-end LCD screens with high resolutions because it helps you to efficiently manage many active windows. The advantage of using WinSplit is that it saves you from having to drag and drop windows by allowing you to snap windows into specific tiled configurations using simple keyboard hotkeys.
